The Eagles Have Landed - Wild Mersey Mountain Bike Works Delayed

Published 3rd November 2023
Construction of the northern trail link connecting the Wild Mersey Mountain Bike Trails, from the Warrawee Conservation Area to the recently completed suspension bridge and onto the Railton Express Trail, has been temporarily suspended following a recent aerial survey confirming the presence of an active Wedge-Tail Eagle's nest near the construction site.

Mayor Peter Freshney of Latrobe Council acknowledged the further delay was somewhat frustrating, given previous delays following the floods in 2022, the expiry of previous permits, and required changes to the design of the link, saying, "While we are committed to the progress of this important project, respecting and maintaining the natural values of the Warrawee Conservation Area has been, and will remain a priority for our council.”

In light of the active eagle’s nest, construction activities on the northern side of the river have been postponed until March, as per the requirements of the property lessor. However, negotiations with the Parks and Wildlife Service have resulted in them permitting the limited use of hand tools by construction workers, however, heavy machinery remains off-limits during this period.

Components of the construction site remain off limits and the Council strongly discourages any attempt to enter the construction site, given the inherent risks and safety-related issues.

In the meantime, an extensive number of Wild Mersey Trails provide a variety of experiences for beginners through to the adrenalin-driven and are accessible from three trailheads at Latrobe, Railton and Sheffield. Further information is available at ridewildmersey.com.au.
