Return to school is imminent and we ask that all road users take care to ensure the safety of students and road users alike.
Council is grateful for the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program funding provided to enable the installation of the roundabout at Gilbert and Percival Streets and appreciative of the safety provided to students attending our local high school. The school community have welcomed the roundabout and have seen the daily benefits in terms of student safety and reduction in the speed of traffic at the intersection more generally.

Here are some key tips for drivers, parents, and students:
For Drivers:
Slow Down: School zones often have reduced speed limits. Be extra cautious and adhere to these limits.
Watch for Pedestrians: Children can be unpredictable. Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and be vigilant in school zones and residential areas.
School Buses: Maintain a safe distance, slow to 40, and be prepared to stop when the bus’s yellow lights are flashing.
Avoid Distractions: Stay focused on the road. Avoid using your phone or other distractions while driving, especially in school zones.
For Parents:
Teach Safe Crossing: Instruct your children to look left-right-left before crossing the street and to use crosswalks.
Bus Safety: Ensure your children know to stay away from the curb while waiting for the bus.
Drop-off Procedures: Follow your school’s specific drop-off and pick-up procedures to ensure the safety of all students.
For Students:
Be Visible: Where possible wear bright clothing or use reflective gear if walking or biking to school.
Stay Alert: Avoid using headphones or electronic devices while walking or biking. Stay aware of your surroundings.
Follow Rules: Obey traffic signals and signs, and always use designated crosswalks and bike lanes.
By following these guidelines, we can help create a safer environment for everyone as students return to school.
Stay safe and have a great school year.
