DOGS – SHALE ROAD LATROBE

Council has noticed an increasing number of people ignoring declarations regarding dogs at Shale Road Latrobe and Warrawee Conservation Area, despite these declarations being in place for a number of years.

It is a dog owner’s responsibility to know if restrictions apply to the areas they take their dog and they must always have their dog under effective control when in public; if unsure you can locate all this information on Council’s website or in the Dog Management Policy.

Under Section 22(2)  of the Dog Control Act 2000 the owner of a dog, other than a guide dog that is accompanying the owner, or a hearing dog that is accompanying the owner, must ensure that the dog does not enter a prohibited area.

Dogs are not permitted in any other part of the Warrawee Conservation Area including walking tracks.  The Parks and Wildlife Services have declared Shale Road as a designated dog on lead exercise area under the National Parks and Reserves Management Regulations 2019.

This means that dogs must be on lead at all times and are restricted to the designated Shale Road only from the Car park with the Boom Gate to (but no further than) the suspension bridge.

If dog owners are ignoring the prohibited and restricted areas, they may attract a current penalty of $202 for having a dog off leash on Shale Road or $808 for having a dog in Warrawee Conservation Area (Except Shale  Road).
