Latrobe and Port Sorell Structure Plans Review 2025

DRAFT LATROBE AND PORT SORELL STRUCTURE PLANS

Following a strong period of population and resident growth, Latrobe Council is looking to the future of the Latrobe and Port Sorell townships with an expectation that this demand will continue, in recognition of the liveability that both towns offer.

Council commissioned a Residential Demand and Supply Study in 2024 to understand the expected population and potential dwelling demand across the municipality and in its key settlement areas. The study also looked at current residential land supply and the areas where future focus might be required.

The main insights of the study are that:

  • people will continue to want to live at Port Sorell and Latrobe, though demand will ease from that experienced more recently;
  • there is continued demand for rural-residential living, which has a higher rate of families than the municipality generally;
  • communities will have a higher proportion of older people, who will likely be living in a higher number of single, or two person households.

Informed by the Residential  Demand and Supply Study, Council has commenced the process of preparing draft Structure Plans for the Latrobe and Port Sorell townships, to guide its position on future growth and development.

Building on the objectives of Council’s Strategic Plan 2020 – 2030,  the aim of the structure plans is to ensure that the aspects that are valued by each community are maintained, but also recognising modern day challenges and looking at how these may be addressed.

This is a conversation that involves the whole community.

The approach engages a number of principles that work together to try to balance the social, economic and environmental aspects of where we live and work, so that our communities are prosperous, liveable and healthy.
