Trees are a valuable part of our ecosystem and a benefit to all members of the community by:

  • encouraging exercise as well as providing an element of safety for walkers near roadsides.
  • absorbing airborne pollutants, helping to reduce air pollution, and aiding in mental health and stress management.
  • helping improve climate and reduce the “urban heat island effect”. The temperature under a tree’s canopy can be reduced by up to 10-25°C compared to surrounding open areas. Trees also intercept stormwater runoff and promote soil infiltration, thus helping reduce stormwater-related issues.
  • enhancing the social life of towns and cities by contributing to lower crime rates, reducing traffic speeds, and reducing the perception of time spent waiting for public transport.

The Latrobe Tree Planting Committee established a Significant Tree Register to recognise and protect the significant trees of our municipality both on public and private land. Trees can be significant for several reasons, including scientific, social, historic, or aesthetic characteristics of significance.

If you know of a tree you believe should be recognised and protected in this way,  please complete and return the nomination form.  Further information can be found in the Guideline.
