The Strategy provides a clear five-year direction to strengthen the Latrobe Council area's economy, support local businesses, attract investment, and ensure the municipality continues to grow as one of Tasmania's key regional centres.
Mayor Peter Freshney said the Strategy reflected both the opportunities and challenges facing one of the State's fastest-growing municipalities.
"The Latrobe Council area has become a major economic hub for North West Tasmania. We have a diverse economy built on agriculture, food manufacturing, aquaculture, health services, logistics and a growing visitor economy."
"This Strategy positions us to capitalise on those strengths while addressing the infrastructure, housing, workforce and investment challenges that come with growth."
The draft Strategy identifies five priority areas:
- Unlocking infrastructure to support jobs and investment;
- Supporting business innovation and industry growth;
- iImproving housing, services and liveability;
- Strengthening tourism, heritage and agritourism opportunities; and
- Building stronger partnerships with industry, neighbouring councils, and government.
Key initiatives include advocating for improved freight and transport infrastructure, supporting industrial growth at Wesley Vale, strengthening the municipality's role in regional logistics and food production, improving digital connectivity, supporting workforce development, and enhancing the visitor experience.
Mayor Freshney said the Strategy had been developed through extensive engagement with Councillors, businesses, industry, and community stakeholders.
"Council has worked closely with local businesses and industry to understand what's needed to support future growth. Now we're asking the broader community to have their say before the Strategy is finalised."
"Economic development isn't just about business - it's about creating jobs, improving services, supporting our townships and ensuring the Latrobe Council area remains a great place to live, work and invest."
Community feedback received during the consultation period, closing 27 August, will be considered before the final Strategy is presented to Council for adoption.
