Proactive Measures Prompted From Asbestos Hazard

Concerns have arisen regarding the location of asbestos at Port Sorell near the pump track off Anderson Street, Port Sorell.

In response, the property owner, Latrobe Council, took immediate action by initiating testing of the substance to confirm whether it was asbestos.  Additionally, the potential hazard was promptly reported to WorkSafe Tasmania.

The safety and well-being of our community are of utmost importance.  With confirmation that the product is asbestos, the affected site near the pump track has been cordoned off for the safety of residents and passersby.

Asbestos, when disturbed, can pose serious health risks due to the release of microscopic dust particles, which can lead to respiratory issues and various forms of cancer.  However, in this instance, advice from the certified asbestos management contractors is that the risk is minimal as the particles are bonded.  They advise that the situation is potentially a legacy issue that has resulted from the dry weather and recent rains bringing the asbestos to the surface.

It is crucial though for the Council to have taken the steps it did to proactively manage such a hazard even before confirmation that it was asbestos.

"Council is committed to prioritising the safety of our community," stated Mayor Peter Freshney of Latrobe Council.  "Upon learning of the potential asbestos concern, Council acted swiftly to secure the area and engage in thorough testing procedures.  Council is also cooperating with WorkSafe Tasmania, advising them of the actions being undertaken."

The community is urged to respect the prohibited area and refrain from entering the site until further notice. Signs associated with the hazard are also prominently displayed for public awareness.

"Council appreciates the cooperation and understanding of the community during this time," added Mayor Freshney.  " In maintaining transparency and ensuring the safety of all residents, updates regarding this situation will be communicated promptly as new information becomes available."
