RECREATIONAL WATER
Council undertakes recreational water testing at sites along the Mersey River and the Rubicon Estuary. The Mersey River flows through rural and urban areas, including the town of Latrobe. The Rubicon Estuary includes the townships of Port Sorell, Squeaking Point, Shearwater and Hawley Beach. Residential areas along these sections of water contain many recreational beaches and are very popular during the warmer months. The primary use of the recreational beaches includes swimming, fishing and boating. There are a number of dog exercise beaches along the areas which are indentified as recreational beaches.
Recreational water samples are collected weekly from seven locations within the municipality. These samples are taken during the warmer months from Deember through to the end of March each year. Sample results are not consistent and vary from week to week depending on, but not limited to the tidal movement and rainfall.
Water samples are collected monthly from public use pools and spas.
