ShearwaterParkDevelopment Plan

The Port Sorell and Environs Strategic Plan 2008 recommends formulation of an Outline Development Plan for those areas of land at Shearwater that contain Shearwater Park, Rubicon Reserve and the Port Sorell Surf Life Saving Club.

The issues presenting Council and the community include:

  • The surf club's desire to expand it's facilities;
  • Requests from community members to provide additional public facilities in Shearwater Park;
  • A concern by property owners located on the western fringe of the park that additional facilities may impact on their residential amenity;
  • Management of the environmental values inherent in the area, inclusive of
  • o protection of the integrity of flora and fauna habitats contained in Rubicon Reserve, which is currently managed by Rubicon Coast and Landcare Inc., and
  • o the sensitive nature of the foreshore reserve, which is challenged by the potential of climate change impacts, coastal erosion, destruction of existing flora and flood inundation etc.

Council engaged consultants Sykes Consulting to undertake the preparation of a plan to provide guidance for future use and development of the area.
A public information evening and meetings with stakeholders and users of the area were held at Port Sorell in late July to enable the consultants to gain an understanding of the community's desired outcomes for the site.

The Draft Shearwater Park Development Plan was presented to Council at its meeting held on 12 October 2009; where it was resolved to receive the Plan and place it on public exhibition for a period of 30 days.

The Draft Plan is available for perusal at Council's offices at 170 Gilbert Street, Latrobe between the hours of 8.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday or by clicking on the link below.
