LATROBE COUNCIL DECLINES PRISON OPPORTUNITY

LATROBE COUNCIL DECLINES PRISON OPPORTUNITY

Following receipt of the State Government's Expressions of Interest (EOI) invitation and the siting principles for the proposed northern prison, Council has been unable to identify any appropriately zoned land that it owns that complies with the guidelines associated with the project.

Mayor Peter Freshney of Latrobe Council said "Council acknowledge and appreciate the State Government's decision to engage with a number of councils, key stakeholders and landowners and again welcome the inclusion of the North West Coast for consideration in that process.

Council's position does not preclude other entities or property owners from engaging in the process but simply articulates our position as a current landowner and a key stakeholder.

Council is supportive of a regional discussion on the issue and will request an agenda item be placed on the Cradle Coast Authority's discussion list at the next available Representatives Meeting.

In the meantime, Council will continue to keep a watching brief on the northern prison project and engage with the government and other stakeholders if and when appropriate."
