Mayors Message

Here's hoping that Latrobe's entry in the Australian Sustainable Communities (Tidy Towns) Competition is strong enough to catch the eye of the judge.

Regardless of the outcome, we feel very honoured to represent Latrobe and Tasmania at the national awards announcement in Caloundra on Friday.

Next Monday, the Latrobe Council Skate Park Committee will be meeting to discuss the design for the park to be located in our sport and recreation precinct.

Students from Latrobe High, Don College, Councillors and Staff will meet the designer to discuss an appropriate skate board park including an outdoor basketball area. Hopefully our Tasmanian Community Fund submission is also well received which will help assist with the finances and ultimately the overall design.

Nature's kaleidoscope of colour is never more evident than with the onset of Autumn where the most splendid colours and hues of burgundy, amber, golds and greens produce a magical carpet across the ground. Whilst we have had a very good summer, there's also something special about the changing seasons. It is however a timely reminder to check the guttering especially with the onset of more winter rains.  Perhaps, with more heating and fires, it would be wise to also check fire alarms as well.

Council Staff are improving the motorhome and caravan park area behind Station Square with grading, drainage, re-sowing, signage, tree plantings and improved entrances included in the scope of works.  To enable the re-sowing to take effect, the grounds will be closed for the next four months.

Mayors Message

Sunday is a special day to recognise the very important role that mums play in the lives of many individuals and families.

There are a number of ways we can recognise and demonstrate our affection for mum's uniqueness and efforts however I truly believe that all you really need use is four words - "I love you mum."

In case that doesn't work, hot breakfast, chocolates or flowers or, my brother's favourite when we were kids - a fishing rod! That should seal it!

There are a number of important social events that occur during the winter months such as service club change over dinners and Chocolate Winterfest, Latrobe however for two worthy and very different events, it is worthwhile considering the following occasions, both to be held at the Latrobe Memorial Hall and Performing Arts Centre.

On Saturday, June 1, the annual fundraising dinner for cystic fibrosis research in memory of the late Dr Leon Wescombe will be held.

On Saturday, June 22 the wonderfully zany Winter Solstice will amaze many party goers who are looking for something different.

More information will be available over the next few weeks but it's a good time to enter the dates in your diaries.
